This may be an obvious question. I was wondering, in general, when prepping for a competition or photo shoot is it common for the person to be close to or even in an absolute calorie deficit during the days leading up to the event?

Personally I wouldn’t take it that far. The consequences outweigh benefits by large. If there is a need for someone to be in a very low caloric intake I would stagger their calories over course of 2 or 3 days. Many ways to skin the cat.
Usually competitors will go into absolute deficits because they begin to panic as the event approaches which is a result of improper prep (poor coaching, lack of knowledge etc.) so being show ready becomes an absolute and proper dieting goes out the window.

Davis,
Some yes and some no;let me explain here...it truly depends on the individual and his/her response to low cals;to present your best package you might drop cals quite low but the key is to remember that this condition will last for a minimum of time. The competitor needs to be mature enough to understand this or else attempting to eat this way will have its negative consenquences on metabolism. As long as you know this and understand that it is not maintainable all goes well.In addition, coaching becomes even more important post-competition to make sure all is on track for a healthy metabolic effect to take place and continue ticking...that's my take on this. But some just never even have to dip that low as well...truly depends on the individual.
